Wahoo!

I had some of this last night at a new restaruant that just opened nearby, Tony Pope's Bistro. Never had it before, but it was very good. Just about everything on the menu was tempting, so I'm glad I was adventurous and ordered something I have never heard of. I'm told they will be changing the menu nightly, so I look forward to another visit. Now, I wonder where I can get some wahoo around here to make at home?

yes, but how were the prices?

Not as high as I expected, but still high enough to make it a special occasion only destination for us.

My wahoo was $23. That's about where all the entrees are. My wife ordered from the "small plates", which are all $8-$10. They were described as "more than an appetizer", which I would dispute (I'm a big guy, so I'd probably get two of them). Soups and salads were $4 - $6. Desserts were $6 - $8, I believe.

We didn't even get a look at the wine list, because when we were there (8:30 Saturday), they were down to their last dozen bottles. We did get a white bordeaux that was good. $28. Generally, we don't buy bottles because of the huge markup, but we haven't been out in awhile, so we did.

Overall, for us, two salads, one small plate, one entree, one dessert, one bottle of wine: $85.

smart move on Tony's part to offer "small plates." I sense a best seller there.

Still, your right - it sounds like another high-end place. How many special occasion eatery's can the city sustain?

And more importantly.. Wheres my diner!

But seriously, where is the middle-class weekly eatery? Something that wont break the budget, but affords a nice once-a-week night away from the kids or something? Somewhere higher than Golden Corral but lower than Trio and the like?

I know, I should stop asking the easy questions and get down to the hard ones.

. . . but not Ruby Tuesday or O'Charley's. There are plenty of "family" restaurants out there, but what about when you want to leave the kids home. Montano's has a good range on the menu, but I just grew tired of it years ago.

I would love an authentic diner, too. One thing I miss most about New York is a good plate of fries with gravy from the diner. That and Italian people . . .
